I was just updating my profile and it kept telling me that I was entering an invalid birthday even though I wasn't entering anything there. Is it supposed to do this or is it a glitch (it's still listed under 'Optional Fields')?

No, it's a bug, your birthday is supposed to be Optional. This bug is known and should be fixed in the next maintenance release.
